March marks the transition from summer to autumn in the Blue Mountains, and the events calendar reflects the shift. Outdoor festivals give way to gallery openings and cosy live music sessions. The weather is comfortable for exploring, the crowds have thinned after the summer peak, and the mountains are settling into their quieter, more atmospheric mode.
Here is what is happening across the upper mountains this March.
Weekly Markets
Katoomba Markets run every Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm at Katoomba Public School on Parke Street. This is the big weekly market with local produce, artisan food, vintage clothing, handmade crafts, and live music. It is walking distance from both our cottages and a great way to start a Saturday morning.
Blackheath Community Market operates on the first Sunday of each month at Blackheath Community Hall. It is smaller and more local than Katoomba, with a focus on handmade goods and Blue Mountains produce.
Leura Fine Woodwork Gallery has ongoing exhibitions of hand-crafted furniture and woodwork from local artisans. Worth a visit if you are in Leura for the afternoon.
The Katoomba Saturday market has the best coffee in the mountains if you find the right stall. Look for the small roaster near the entrance. They use beans from a farm in northern NSW and roast weekly.
Live Music and Performance
The Blue Mountains has a strong live music scene, particularly around Katoomba. Several venues host regular gigs through March:
The Baroque Room (Katoomba) hosts weekend performances ranging from jazz to folk to experimental. Check their website for the March schedule. The room itself is beautiful, housed in the old Gearin's Hotel building.
Clarendon Tavern (Katoomba) has live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. It is a proper locals' pub with a good atmosphere and surprisingly good acts.
Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub (Springwood) runs theatrical productions and comedy nights throughout the month.
Art and Galleries
March is gallery season in the Blue Mountains. The cooler weather brings a new round of exhibitions:
Blue Mountains Cultural Centre (Katoomba) hosts rotating exhibitions in their gallery space. The centre also houses the Blue Mountains World Heritage Interpretive Centre, which is free and worth visiting for an understanding of the geological and ecological significance of the area.
Gallery Blackheath features local and visiting artists with new exhibitions monthly.
The mountains have one of the highest concentrations of working artists in NSW, and many open their studios by appointment. Ask locally for recommendations.
Outdoor Activities
March weather in the Blue Mountains is ideal for outdoor activities. Daytime temperatures of 16 to 22 degrees make for comfortable hiking without the summer heat.
Scenic World operates daily and March is one of the best months to visit. The crowds are manageable, and the valley views are spectacular in the softer autumn light.
Canyoning and abseiling operators run trips year-round, but March is a sweet spot for water-based activities before the cold sets in.
Mountain biking on the Oaks Trail and Narrow Neck is excellent in the stable March weather.
March evenings in Katoomba are cool enough for a fire but warm enough to sit on the deck with a glass of wine. It is the last month where you get both options in the same evening.
Plan Your March Visit
March is the quiet shoulder season between summer crowds and the autumn leaf-peepers who arrive in April. Accommodation is more available and prices are generally lower than peak periods.
Both our cottages are walking distance to the Katoomba Saturday markets, local cafes, and the train station. Book direct and save 15%.
